Trabzon is one of the large cities on the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey. Trabzon, being located on the historical Silk Road, became a center for religions, languages and cultures, as well as a major trading gateway. The history of the town goes back to 14th century BC, the Iron Age.


Built as a church in the 13th century, Hagia Sophia of Trabzon has served as a hospital and a museum, but today is a mosque with restored ceiling Christian frescoes.
