Kyoto is one the oldest cities in Japan and was the capital of Japan for eleven centuries, until 1869. Today it is considered the cultural capital of Japan and a major tourist destination, since it has many Buddhist temples, Shionto shrines, palaces and gardens, some of which are considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
